Data Sources & Licenses

Last updated: 16 October 2026

Scanor combines factual product information from identified sources with Scanor-generated analysis. This page explains which data comes from third parties, which licences apply, and which outputs are created by Scanor.

Open product databases

Scanor uses factual product data from Open Food Facts for food products and Open Beauty Facts for cosmetics where available. Those databases are made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. Individual database contents are subject to the Open Data Commons Database Contents License.

When factual database content from Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts is used, Scanor identifies the relevant source. Their inclusion in Scanor does not imply that those projects endorse Scanor, Scanor Score, or Scanor's interpretation of the data.

ODbL database download

A machine-readable snapshot of Scanor's current ODbL-derived factual product database is available for download. The export is updated automatically when the factual database changes and is provided under ODbL 1.0.

Normalization & processing

Scanor may normalize labels, units, ingredient names, taxonomies, translations, and data structures so source facts can be displayed and processed consistently. A technical normalization is not, by itself, a claim that the underlying product or its packaging changed, and it is not presented as an edit made by Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts.

Where ODbL source data is incorporated into Scanor's factual product-data layer, the applicable ODbL obligations continue to apply to that ODbL-derived database layer.

Product images

Product images are licensed separately from the product database. Open Food Facts states that its product images are available under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (CC BY-SA 3.0). Images may also contain logos, packaging artwork, trademarks, or other graphical elements subject to separate rights.

For an image sourced from Open Food Facts, the applicable credit is to Open Food Facts contributors together with the CC BY-SA 3.0 licence. Other image or media sources remain subject to their own source notices and licence terms.

Scanor-generated outputs

Scanor Score, recommendations, comparisons, explanations, AI-generated analysis, and other Scanor intelligence are outputs produced by Scanor using available inputs. They are not Open Food Facts or Open Beauty Facts database fields and are not presented as statements made or endorsed by those projects.

Technical normalization of ODbL-sourced factual data should not be confused with these separate Scanor-generated analytical outputs.

Other sources

Scanor may also use product information obtained independently or under separate licences or contracts. Such data remains subject to its own provenance and applicable licence or contract terms; it is not automatically relicensed under ODbL merely because Scanor also uses ODbL data elsewhere.
